Active Release Technique (ART)

A soft tissue/movement based massage technique for treatment of conditions affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia & nerves.
"Based on a referral from a friend, I went to see Dr. Nathan Zachor at Schubbe Resch. Dr. Zachor leveraged his chiropractic and physical therapy training to diagnose me with sciatic nerve entrapment. He treated me with the Active Release Technique (ART) and almost immediately I experienced relief from my pain and discomfort. After a few sessions, the results have been amazing and I am able to live a more active and pain free lifestyle that I thought was gone for good. In addition, I am not sentenced to a lifetime of recurring chiropractic visits and the related on-going expense. Thank you many times over Dr. Zachor for thinking out of the box to help me regain my health and wellness." ~Doug Gable, Neenah

ART is a patented, soft tissue system/movement-based massage technique that treats a wide variety of medical problems affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. This technique provides pain relief from headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, sore shoulder, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems and tennis elbow caused by overused muscles. Many athletes have benefited from ART.

What causes overused muscles?

  • Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis and nerves can become trapped. This results in reduced range of motion, loss of strength and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

What can I expect from ART treatment?

Each appointment will include a combination exam and treatment. The chiropractor uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by manually applying precise tension with specific movements.

These treatment protocols - more than 500 specific moves - are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach.

How was ART developed?

ART was developed and patented by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP. Dr. Leahy noticed that his patients' symptoms seemed to be related to changes in their soft tissue that could be felt by hand. By observing how muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves responded to different types of massage, Dr. Leahy was able to consistently resolve over 90 percent of his patients' problems. He now teaches ART and certifies health care providers all over the world.
